UCSD Telemedicine & Prime Education HEq Facility

La Jolla, California

Scope of Work:

  • Special Inspection
  • Materials Testing
  • Laboratory Testing
  • Written Report

Ninyo & Moore provided special inspection and materials testing services during construction of the new Telemedicine & Prime Education HEq building. The project included construction of a new 4-level medical education structure approximately 82,000 square-feet in size. The building has offices and classrooms where medical students learn to provide medical care to remote areas via telecommunications. The building is a reinforced concrete structure with an open atrium in the center of the building. The structure is spanned by three 87-foot long, 6-foot deep roof trusses and covered with a concrete roof slab. The structure is supported on shallow foundations with a concrete slab-on-grade floor.

Project Challenge: Due to the complexity of the structure, much of the reinforced concrete construction contained a large amount of reinforcing steel, and some of the walls were constructed at oblique angles. Some of these features included a floating staircase, walls that were constructed at angles, and other architectural concrete. This made inspection and testing challenging. In one instance, the contractor installed anchors that needed to be pull tested, however the standard pull testing equipment was not able to be used due to the complex geometry of the reinforced concrete surrounding the anchor.

Innovative Solution: In order to provide pull testing of the anchors, Ninyo & Moore worked with the Inspector of Record and project Structural Engineer to design an extension to the pull testing equipment so that it could be attached to the anchors. The custom-made apparatus allowed the pull testing to be conducted in accordance with the project requirements to the satisfaction of the design team.

Services: Ninyo & Moore's services included special inspection of reinforced concrete, reinforced masonry, structural steel/welding, fireproofing, and a floor flatness survey. Laboratory testing included concrete cylinders in compression, masonry prisms, masonry grout, masonry mortar, and fireproofing density. A final report was provided after completion of the special inspection and materials testing services.
