- Close Coordination with Agency
- Written Report
Ninyo & Moore performed construction materials testing and special inspection services for the construction of Phase III of the Tarryall Creek Road project. The project included major grading, drainage, aggregate base, Superpave hot asphalt concrete pavement, rockery construction, bridge removal, and construction of a new 91-foot single span concrete bridge. This project required approximately 100,000 cubic yards of earthwork, 50,000 tons of aggregate base, 20,000 tons of Superpave hot asphalt concrete pavement, 3,500 feet of pipe culvert, 40,000 feet of fencing, 30,000 lbs of epoxy coated reinforcement, and 273 feet of pre-cast concrete girders.
Project Challenge: The project crossed rolling and mountainous terrain in the Pike National Forest at an approximate elevation of 8,900 feet and consisted of the reconstruction of approximately 8 miles of Forest Route 77. A significant challenge to the project was the high-altitude climate, short construction season, and a remote location that inhibited the use of most communications equipment.
Innovative Solution: Ninyo & Moore utilized an on-site materials laboratory to complete the laboratory testing services. Our mobile laboratory was equipped with laboratory testing equipment for testing aggregate base, embankment and subgrade soil, and Superpave asphalt paving. On-site communications were facilitated by the use of hand-held radios, satellite-enabled broadband, and the close proximity of our technicians, who lived in temporary accommodations near the project site. This project was indicative of Ninyo & Moore's ability to successfully perform its services in a remote location, at altitude, and under changing and sometimes severe weather conditions.
Services: Ninyo & Moore's scope of services included construction materials testing during earthwork operations, bridge foundation observation, utility trench backfill, concrete placement, and placement of Superpave asphalt pavement. Our services included laboratory testing of materials including soil, aggregate, mortar, grout, PCC concrete, and asphalt concrete. Our scope also included special inspection services for masonry, structural steel and welding, and reinforcing steel.
