Ground Motion Selection and Scaling Considerations for the CFS-NHERI Capstone 10-Story Building Specimen

Ninyo & Moore is extremely proud to be represented at the 18th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE2024), to be held in Milan, Italy June 30 through July 5, 2024.

“Ground Motion Selection and Scaling Considerations for the CFS-NHERI Capstone 10-Story Building Specimen” is a paper that describes the effort by the Structural Engineering Department of UC San Diego, in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University and UMass Amherst, in developing and executing a research project that aims to study the behavior and response of a 10-story full-scale building (utilizing a large, high-performance outdoor shake table) with a cold-formed steel (CFS) frame when subjected to real-world earthquake motions. The outcome of this research may have significant impact on the future Building Codes.

Professional staff from Ninyo & Moore’s Irvine office, Soumitra Guha, PhD, PE, GE (Principal Engineer) and Spencer Marcinek, PE, GE (Senior Engineer), provided relevant seismic data to the research group and performed peer review of their work, respectively. This was a unique opportunity for our geotechnical engineering professionals to oversee and critique a significant structural engineering research work and provide guidance in a collaborative manner.

The WCEE2024 Conference is expected to attract nearly 4,000 participants from academic/research institutions, industry, and the public sector.
