Project Neon, the largest public works project in Nevada history, involved the widening of 3.7 miles of Interstate 15 between Sahara Avenue and the “Spaghetti Bowl” interchange in downtown Las Vegas.

Project Highlights:

  • Geotechnical Evaluation
  • Design, Monitoring, and Interpretation of a Full-Scale Drilled Shaft Load Testing Program
  • Deep Foundation Integrity Testing
  • Pre- and Post-Property Condition Assessments
  • Ground Vibration Monitoring
  • Widening of 3.7 Miles of Interstate 15
  • 29 New Bridges
  • Drilled Shaft Foundations to 110 Feet Deep
  • MSE and Pre-Cast Retaining Walls up to 30 Feet in Height

Ninyo & Moore performed a design geotechnical evaluation, cross-hole sonic logging (CSL), Property Condition Assessments, and ground vibration monitoring for NDOT’s Project Neon Design-Build located along the Interstate 15 (I-15) corridor between Sahara Avenue and Bonanza Road. Ninyo & Moore also designed and monitored a full-scale drilled shaft load testing program and developed axial capacity relationships based on the acquired data. The project included design and construction of 29 new bridges, including an HOV direct connect between US-95 and I-15, conversion of express lanes on I-15 to HOV, a new I-15 HOV interchange, reconstruction of the I-15/Charleston Avenue interchange, Martin Luther King (MLK) realignment with a flyover at Charleston Avenue, and extension of Grand Central Parkway to Industrial Road. The concrete bridges are supported on drilled shaft foundations constructed to depths up to 110 feet. Mechanically stabilized earth and pre-cast retaining walls up to 30 feet high are used to support embankments near bridge structures. The project also includes design and construction of RCB and RCP drainage structures, sign structures, temporary walls, steepened slopes, utilities, and asphalt concrete and concrete pavement.
